Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common form of arthritis and affects women 2-3 times more than men.  The worldwide prevalence is 0,5-1%.  RA is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease and affects all joints, muscles, tendons, connective tissue and fibrous tissues of the body.  Inflammatory cells and cytokines (e.g. interleukin -1B (IL-1B), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) invade the joint, leading to eventual severe disability in many cases.  The aforementioned inflammation leads to pain, atrophy, and deformation of joints.  Muscle “distortion”, bone erosion and osteoporosis are frequently seen in RA patients. RA results in dysfunction, which leads to disability and decreased quality of life.  In the long term, Rheumatoid arthritis often leads to premature death.  Quercetin is found in many foods of plant origin.  The best sources are onions, lettuce, broccoli, tomato, tea, berries, apples and olive oil.  Previous studies have shown that quercetin suppresses the secretion of inflammatory molecules (cytokines) by regulating gene expression of key chemicals involved in inflammation.  A number of animal studies have shown that quercetin can effectively reduce arthritis in animal models, and human studies have shown this polyphenol to reduce arthritis pain in humans.  ...
